Tobacco smoking is the single largest cause of preventable illness and death in New Zealand. Tobacco use is a related factor for one in four cancer deaths in this country. Understandably there is significant commitment to the national drive towards a Smokefree New Zealand by 2025.
Non-smokers are at risk too – 350 deaths per year (plus a number of diseases and illnesses) are estimated to be from past exposure to second-hand smoke in New Zealand. One aim of smokefree law is to protect all workers and the public from second-hand smoke.
