Whanganui Accident & Medical

The Whanganui Accident & Medical (WAM) clinic is conveniently located within the Whanganui Hospital campus next to the Emergency Department (ED) and focuses on assessment and treatment of accidents and injuries, as well as providing after-hours general medical care.

WAM and the ED Department are independent services, but they share a single reception and triage service (the process of sorting people to determine medical priority). This initial assessment advises you on the particular service you require.

WAM delivers a general practice service for people with medical problems, such as asthma and infections, and particularly caters to people without their own general practitioner (GP), people new to Whanganui, or those who are visiting.

If you already have a GP you should be seeing them for appointments between the hours of 8.30am and 5pm during the week, but if it is after-hours or you are unable to access your own GP then you should go to WAM.

Sporting injuries or those that occur at work or home, such as lacerations, fractures, sprains or eye injuries are covered by ACC and can be treated with minimal cost at WAM. The clinic also provides follow-up with minor fractures that do not need hospital referral. After-hours we are able to supply some medications, until people can get to a pharmacy.

People experiencing serious problems that may need hospital treatment, such as chest pain, breathing problems or loss of consciousness, should still phone an ambulance or present at the ED / WAM reception and the nurses will then support you to the service that best meets your needs.

WAM patients have access to the Whanganui Hospital's x-ray and laboratory services. This accessible and affordable health care service is open from 8am to 9pm, seven-days a week, including public holidays. Appointments are not necessary, but it does help to phone first and check. Outside of these hours, an emergency service is still provided by the ED hospital team.

There are some payment options available to make it easier for you to pay for the services that you require, so please do not hesitate to talk to our friendly front desk staff to access one of these options.
